We have had to made drastic changes due to Hurricane Katrina. Stella and I had worked in our home and all our books were stored there. The large house was washed away by Katrina’s 30+-foot storm surge, leaving nothing but the slab. Our inventory of 12,000 books was destroyed.

In the two years since the storm, we have struggled to continue. We have managed to publish a new book, A White Egret in the Shallows, in May after the storm. It has been doing very well thanks to readers such as you. Also, we have been able to reprint three of our best sellers, Sink or Be Sunk, and Holly!!, and Stella’s cookbook, Blueberry Peaches Red Robin Pie using plates that the out-of-state printers luckily saved (Sink or Be Sunk is a revised edition in that it contains a portrait and biography of Midshipman William P. Canby, one of the men mortally wounded in the naval action).

In addition to these books, a limited number of our audio book, Other Views from the Porch were saved and are now available.

In August, we came out with another new book, One Dog, Two Dogs, Three Dogs, Four… , a collection of stories about Gretal, Heron, Lillie and Jennie, dogs you may be familiar with from our other books. It, too, has done very well since publication.

Finally, Views from a Front Porch, Waiting for the White Pelicans and Where the Blue Herons Dance, will be reprinted in late summer of 2008. A principle change in these reprinted editions is that they will all be in hard back and have dust jackets.

So, we are back in business, although going a little slower than before. I will continue to provide a story each month (please look at the story for this month). However, Stella’s present limited kitchen precludes her writing a new column for a while. Her monthly columns will be repeats of her most popular columns and recipes. Hopefully this will change by spring of next year.
